TOUR ACROSS AMERICA

MONTANA

Montana has no day time speed limit. The signs were too high for bicyclists or cars; only high-riding pick-ups, and semis were at eye level.

Even though there is no posted speed limit, the state does have periodic reminders about how fast to go.

In order to protect their main product (cattle) from deadly highways, they've built underpasses for cows (I'm not making this up).

Life moves at a slower pace here; cars don't wear out as fast. We didn't see working Edsel, but here's a DeSoto.

In the east, towns are few and far between. Volborg, like most of these towns, consisted of a general store/post office. The proprietress said, no, the sign (pop.5) was wrong; there were only 4 people living there. Her mother-in-law had just moved back to California. Federal regulations require the post office to have handicapped parking, often the only pavement off the highway for fifty mile.

All that open space made for great sunrises, too.
