The Night Before

Number 2123, that’s me. That’s my number for Ironman # 16, here in Tempe tomorrow on Nov 22nd, a date some of us still remember – I also did an Ironman on September 11, 2005, and did very well in that race, so maybe somber anniversaries are portentous for me.

I’m going through all my rituals tonight. Cheryl and I saw “Pirate Radio”, a forgettable but enjoyable movie. Then did Jamba Juice. This time, I sat in the hot tub while I drank it, so as to avoid the shivers I usually get chugging 24 ounces of iced Chocolate Moo’d.

Then, in 12 hours, off we go. I hope to get back by 6 PM, MST. 68 minute swim, 5:36 bike, and 4:08 run, all plus or minus of course. And without any egregious errors, of course. No speeding early on the bike. No caffeine. No skimping on fluids. And no silly racing stuff. Just hydration, nutrition, and pace. Then the time and the race take care of themselves.

See you on the other side.
