New Year’s Letter

[Written mostly by Cheryl]

2015!

Today is the First Day of 2015. The temperature is chilly, but the light is clear and crisp. Here is our recap of 2014:

In January last year (2014!), Al retired from medicine and hasn’t really looked back. “You know it’s time to retire when work gets in the way of the things you want to do!” He directs his energy into his athletic pursuits – qualifying again for the Ironman World Championships this year in Kona, Hawaii. We will be on the Big Island again this October. Well, there’s that and skiing.  Check out his blog for his commentary on life: athleticism, book and movie reviews, and politics. I finished my intense, yearlong midwifery reentry program in December 2013 with new appreciation for the expanded skill level that Certified Nurse-Midwives have reached in the States. I still believe in the incredible work Midwives for Haiti does to educate skilled birth attendants there. I was lucky to return in March and hope to return annually until I can’t. Another personal highlight this year was taking a 2+-week trek in the Himalayas of Nepal with six wonderful women. The trek was exhilarating and challenging on all levels, but I did well, even at 14,000 snowy feet, hiking up and down steep and rocky paths. Alas, I am currently having an unexpected and prolonged recovery from hand surgery (my handwriting is at an all-time low). While this has slowed me down, I now have a new appreciation for the parts of me that still work!

The Truscott Kidz are a close-knit, interesting, and fun group of adults now, all calling Seattle “home”. Cody continues working on software projects and is a remarkable property manager of our Snowmass home. [See http://www.vrbo.com/327001 ]. Shaine continues to fight passionately for the sustenance of bottom rung workers through SEIU. She took well-earned trips to Hawaii and Argentina this fall. Annie is committed to playing bass for Chastity Belt, the band that started on a whim in college and now turning out their second vinyl record this March. Yoga, book club, friends, and working as a barista round out her life.

Rico, our sweet but bossy fourteen-year old orange tabby, is still keeping Al and I in line.

One of my favorite things during the holidays is touching bases with Auld Acquaintances. We’re glad we are still on your mailing list!

Warmly,

Cheryl and Al
