Week 3 Transition: De-Tuning After Kona Kancel

On the road Sat Sep 4- Wed Sep 8, camping, hiking in state/Nat’l parks with Cheryl.

Thursday, I tried a 6.3 mile run/walk, four miles up from 8000′ >> 8900′, then down to 8300′ on 2.2 miles. Averaged 15:30 miles. BUT – I learned that my R knee can’t handle that sort of terrain, even with judicious pacing. It just swells up and finally refuses to take the load. So Fri/Sat did 8 mile hikes, Sunday rode up Maroon Bells + Castle Creek with my daughter, then Monday another hike above Independence Pass to 12,750′ – not much air there. Did see Lance riding up the pass (no lie) with a group of 20 or so spread out – his Strava feed says he set a PR from the town to the top in 1 hour 30′. That’s 21 miles, 4100’…

This week, I am starting 12 week HIM prep. But it will be modified greatly, as swimming has become prohibitively expensive here…from free for me to $23 a session. Bob Sherwood + Scott Dinhofer will be here for a 4-5 day weekend, so biking with them. I’ll try running 2-3 miles daily on the “flats” (1-2% grades). Plan for this week:

Mon: High altitude hike
Tue: Body Work, 2-3 mile run/walk
Wed: FTP bike workout on the neighborhood hills. Run again in PM.
Thurs: Z1/2 bike down valley while my car gets repaired in Glenwood Spgs, another 2-3 mile run.
Fri: Body work, run
Sat: Not sure what I’ll be doing. Bob and Scott will be running the local trail HM Snowmass >> Aspen across the ski area. Maybe I run or ride in the PM.
Sun: 3.5 hour ride with the group.
